Used regularly by the owners, Tigh Beag is a modern, detached house in a quiet residential area of Tobermory. Tigh Beag
Tigh Beag's new balcony

January 2006 saw the completion of our new balcony.  This wooden structure has a surface area of some 16m2 and enables guests to eat outdoors in comfort.  We have always provided garden furniture and a small barbeque but now a patio heater and a gas BBQ are also available for your added pleasure.

Click here for a Tobermory map showing the location of Tigh Beag.

Tobermory town centre, with the famous multi-coloured properties on the sea front, has a good selection of shops.

Tobermory harbour

These include a Co-op supermarket, butcher, baker/deli (their home made pizzas are reputed to be very good), post office, chemist, etc. There is also the chance to pamper yourself at Catriona's Hair & Beauty Salon. The pubs and restaurants offer varied menus from bar meals to superb seafood and local delicacies, including freshly caught haggis!! The Gallery provides takeaway food. Takeaway food is available from the Sagar Tandoori but visitors to Tigh Beag receive a discount voucher for use in the restaurant.

If you like fish and chips, you must try the van at Tobermory pier. This is the view you will have from there:

In addition to a shop on Main Street, the Mull Pottery workshops are located at Baliscate. Visitors can see the pottery being made and there is a large range of products on display. There is also a Café/Bistro to enjoy.

Then there are the chocolate factory and the whisky distillery to visit - both are opportunities to indulge yourself. And of course, Tobermory is the home of "Balamory", the popular BBC children's programme. Most of the locations used are only a short walk from Tigh Beag, but you will find there is more to see and do than just visit these houses.

Just around the corner from Tigh Beag is the An Tobar Arts Centre. Live music events can be booked here and there is also a cafe. The Mull Theatre is another popular venue and the booking office is on Main Street.

Mull is a beautiful island, reached by a 45 minute ferry crossing from Oban on the rugged west coast of Scotland, to Craignure on Mull. If you are travelling by rail from Glasgow, train times are available from First ScotRail. The railway station in Oban is adjacent to the ferry terminal. A coach journey from Glasgow to Oban is also a possibility and details are on the website. Cars can be hired from Mull Car Hire in Craignure or Mackays in Tobermory. There is a good bus service from Craignure to Tobermory (30-45 minutes journey time) and a local taxi is available in Tobermory. Make sure your journey is planned well in advance and the Calmac ferry booked early, especially in the high season. If you are travelling to Mull from northern Scotland, the ferry from Lochaline on the mainland to Fishnish could be used.

Ferry for Mull

The drive from Glasgow to the ferry terminal in Oban takes about 2 - 2½ hours and you must arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled sailing time. It is best to arrive early, get in the holiday mood, and wander around the town before boarding the ferry.

When you arrive at Craignure after the short ferry crossing, a visit to the Tourist Information Centre will enable you to collect leaflets on the many attractions and maybe make a few purchases. Alternatively, the TIC in Tobermory is open from Easter until the end of October.

The road from Craignure to Tobermory meanders along the beautiful Sound of Mull and the drive to Tigh Beag will take 30 - 45 minutes.

In addition to golf, fishing, cycling and walking, there is much more to see and do on Magnificent Mull, including ferry trips to other islands. Mull is the third largest of the Hebrides and has a resident population of some 3,000. During the summer, this figure probably doubles. However, being about twice as large as the Isle of Wight but with a considerably smaller population, Mull never seems crowded. There are probably more sheep than people on Mull and there are also herds of highland cattle.

Most of the roads on Mull are single track but with many passing places.

Single track road with passing place.

However care should always be taken when driving, as sheep and cattle have been known to leave their fields. If you want to explore the island but do not want to drive, a bus service is provided by Bowmans Coaches. Alternatively, treat yourself to a personal tour of the island. Chris Jones of Tours About Mull is a registered tour guide operator and can even offer tours customised to your own requirements.

In addition to the visitor's display folder in Tigh Beag, the Tobermory website provides all sorts of valuable tourist information. On this site you will also find 360° panoramic tours, aerial views and images. Bikes can be hired from Browns, where golf tickets and fishing permits for the Mishnish Lochs can also be purchased. Other useful sites are the Isle of Mull and Holiday Mull ones. Alternatively, just relax, enjoy yourself and soak up the spectacular scenery.

The Quest is a challenge aimed at kids aged 7-12 but parents have also been known to take part. It has proved very popular and should be tried. Everyone who completes The Quest will receive a Leigheagan - the magical stone of Mull.

Golfers who like a challenge will appreciate Tobermory Golf Club.

The par is 64 for men and 68 for ladies but we believe the course record is currently 65. If you cannot beat that or even get near it, don't worry. The views from the course can be absolutely stunning, so you will still enjoy the round.

The owners use the house regularly, providing a "home from home" atmosphere with many personal touches. When you arrive, a welcome pack ensures a cup of tea before going shopping. Just arrive and relax into the atmosphere of Tigh Beag right away.

All the rooms are well furnished and every effort has been made to provide everything you might need for an enjoyable stay.

There is private parking for 2 cars at the front of the property, plus a lock up garage.

the baclony with patio heater and gas BBQ

The large wooden balcony is ideal for dining ‘al fresco’. In addition to the gas BBQ and patio heater, a table and 6 chairs (with cushions) are also provided.

Electric heating is provided throughout and mains electric smoke alarms are fitted. All the windows are double glazed. Indoor and outdoor drying facilities are provided. Electricity, bed linen and towels are included in our prices. Cigarette smoking is restricted to the lounge area only.

There are unfortunately times when holidays have to be cancelled due to illness or other unforeseen events and insurance cover can protect against this. We strongly recommend that you purchase a Holiday Cancellation Policy.

Visitors from countries outside the UK are always made very welcome on Mull. Guests from Germany may find an added advantage when booking Tigh Beag, as Margo Wilkie speaks fluent German.

Sorry, but no pets are allowed...

...of any kind!

The new reclining, leather lounge furniture, with footrests

The 3 bedrooms can comfortably sleep six and there is also a single airbed with an electric pump. In June 2005, the lounge furniture was replaced with new leather units consisting of 2 x two seat couches and one armchair. All seats are reclining and have footrests.

This improvement has also enabled us to increase the size of our dining area.

The dining area

Downstairs has storage heaters throughout, with electric radiators upstairs. Timers are provided for these and there are radio alarm clocks in all the bedrooms. The twin room is provided with waterproof bedding protectors.
